MSF Basic RiderCourse

Get trained, get licensed. The FAST TRACK to motorcycle licensing!

This 2-day course helps students learn skills such as straight-line riding, shifting, turning, swerving and stopping (including making quick stops). Motorcycles are provided. After successfully learning these essential skills, you can earn the DMV Road Test Waiver card which can be redeemed for a motorcycle license!

Course Highlights:

  • "ePackage 1 eCourse (5hr)": is a free online eCourse that must be completed at home prior to the first day of the course. Instructions on how to access the "ePackage 1 eCourse (5hr)"will be emailed to you after you register for the course. For more details:
  • Training Hours: 11 hours at an MSS location learning to ride a motorcycle on our practice range!
  • DMV Road Test Waiver Card: Students must successfully pass the skills exam. If you don't pass the skills test on the first try, you will be allowed to take 1 free retest. However, please note that DMV regulations require individuals who fail the skills retest to retake the entire course.

    **If you are only interested in MSF Basic RiderCourse:
    • There is no guarantee that every student can operate a motorcycle and meet the course objectives in the allotted course time, even though it is a beginner course.
    • Therefore, it is recommended, but not required, to prepare for the course by taking additional training such as a Private Lesson or Motorcycling 101.
    • This additional training reduces the chance of being unsafe, counseled-out and forfeiting the tuition.
    • If I am unsafe at any time, I will be counseled-out and must leave the course and forfeit tuition.
    • If I am counseled-out of the course for any reason, in accordance with the DMV guidelines, I will forfeit tuition and cannot reschedule.
    • English as a 2nd Language (ESL) student: it is strongly recommended to bring a translator. If you are unsafe due to language comprehension, the tuition is forfeited, and no rescheduling.

  • Must have a valid New York State Driver's License
    Note: The New York DMV only accepts a NY Driver's License. Tuition is forfeited without proper documentation so please confirm regulations for No Drivers License Out-of-State Driver License, International Driver License and Junior Operators.
  • Must successfully complete the online "ePackage 1 eCourse (5hr)"
  • Must be able to ride a bicycle
  • Must wear Proper Riding Gear

    DMV Waiver Card Redemption Requirements:
    After successful course completion, graduates present the following valid documents to receive the M-motorcycle endorsement on their New York State Driver's License:
  • Valid New York State Driver's License*
  • DMV Road Test Waiver
  • Valid New York State Motorcycle Permit*
    *Please note that you can take the test to receive the motorcycle permit after you have completed the Basic RiderCourse with MSS. You can take the permit test on the same day that you are looking to turn in all the documents to the DMV, but make sure you take the permit test first!

    Basic RiderCourse Highlights
    The course includes a five hour online eCourse and 11 hours of riding experience in a controlled environment under the supervision of an MSF-certified Rider Coach. This 5-minute video will give you a feel for what you will experience as a student in the Basic Rider Course training program.
