Curriculum Overview

Motorcycle Safety School provides training and licensing courses for all experience levels at 7 teaching locations throughout New York State. Below is the curriculum overview depending on the individual skill set.

Ultimate Training Package
This discounted package for beginners includes the entire training curriculum to get a motorcycle license. This allows a person who has never ridden a motorcycle or scooter to successfully pass the licensing course and acquire an intermediate skill level. Motorcycles are provided for all services. This package includes 3 courses that must be taken in sequential order:

Core Training Package

This discounted package for beginners includes the essential training curriculum to get a motorcycle license. This allows a person who has never ridden a motorcycle or scooter to learn the skills necessary to successfully pass the licensing course. Motorcycles are provided for all courses. This package includes 2 courses that must be taken in sequential order:


Motorcycling 101
This 2-hour introductory course covers the basics of motorcycling from what type of gear to wear to the motorcycle controls and straight-line riding on a motorcycle. This course prepares students for the 2-day licensing MSF Basic RiderCourse.

Private Lessons
Enjoy personalized instruction at your own pace. Learn how to ride safely and practice slow speed maneuvers while under the guidance of a DMV-Certified Instructor. Private lessons are highly recommended for new riders to build confidence and to become familiar with a motorcycle while preparing for the 2-day licensing MSF Basic RiderCourse. Intermediate riders must schedule lessons after 6pm for additional parking lot availability, or call the office for alternative options.

BASIC COURSE:
MSF Basic RiderCourse
This 2-day licensing course includes a 5-hour mandatory online eCourse and 10 hours of practical training. Students will learn skills such as straight-line riding, shifting, turning, swerving, and stopping (including making quick stops). At the end of the course, students test for the DMV Road Test Waiver Card that can be redeemed for a motorcycle license!
  • Please note: students who are unsafe and unable to meet the course objectives within the allotted course time will be counseled out and required to leave the course early. No refunds or rescheduling options are given to students who are counseled out. Students are encouraged to register for the Ultimate Training Package which includes an introductory course known as Motorcycling 101 or register for a Private Lesson beforehand to avoid the potential risk of this happening.

MSF 3-Wheel Basic RiderCourse
This 2-day licensing course offers students a restricted M license and teaches skills such as straight-line riding, turning, swerving and stopping on a Can Am Ryker Vehicle. At the end of the course, students test for the DMV Road Test Waiver card, that can be redeemed for a restricted 3-wheel license!

INTERMEDIATE COURSE:
MSF Basic RiderCourse 2 – Skills Practice
Refresh or fine-tune safety skills and maneuvers during this 5-hour non-licensing course on either a motorcycle or scooter. This course is ideal for intermediate riders or MSF Basic RiderCourse graduates to practice slow speed exercises that fine-tunes skill such as swerving, braking and cornering techniques.

ADVANCED COURSE:
MSF Basic RiderCourse 2 - License Waiver
This licensing course is for experienced riders ONLY. It includes a 4-hour mandatory online eCourse and 6 hours of practical training. The DMV requires that students have 30 hours of riding experience and can perform circles and U-turns without practice.
  • Counsel-Out Policy: If unable to perform these maneuvers, the student will be counseled out and must leave the course early. No refunds or rescheduling options are given to students who are counseled out. If there is any hesitation in having this skill set, it is recommended to take the MSF Basic RiderCourse instead.
